We were down 1 in the 8th when the rain hit. We play at least two innings tomorrow, hopefully more. *shakes fist at UC Irvine*

You know, of course, that there's absolutely no scenario under which I could be rooting for Texas?

That said, I'd rather it was Rice putting on the beatdown.

We lost our big bat and starting catcher this week. even if we advance we're fucked. I hope A&M beats you all now... XD

Shockers came back from a first-game loss to beat New Orleans this afternoon, and then beat Arizona this evening to force the game tomorrow. Great game tied at 3-3 going into the 9th, and in the bottom of the inning with two outs and the count two and two, man on second, Schermerhorn hit a centerfield double that bounced off the fence ten feet in front of me to drive in the winning run. A couple of feet more altitude and I might have had a souvenir...

It's nice having the regional a mile up the road! Made most of the home games this year, and got to see Schermerhorn steal home this spring.

That is pretty cool. And if they go, first time since, when, the 90's sometime? (Of course, still have to knock off Arizona, and make it through the super-regionals...)

Didn't Wayne Graham coach there?
Tullytully01 on June 4th, 2007 07:11 pm (UTC)
Gene Stephenson's been the head coach here since he revived the program in '78. I don't know if Graham ever coached under him. His career win record makes Graham's look anemic, but it makes everyone's look anemic--he's the winningest active coach in the NCAA by percentages. For Stephenson the only competition is Augie Garrido at UT-Austin, who has a lower win percentage but a couple of dozen more total career wins. Both cleared 1500 career wins years ago, the only two NCAA coaches to ever do so.

Shockers haven't been to the College World Series since '96, but they've been in the regionals 25 of the last 29 years. Hey, if you've gotta have a college baseball team right up the street, it's nice to have a pretty good one!

Hmmm. Graham used to coach some other winning program somewhere before he moved to Rice, but I don't remember where. At least I seem to remember that he did.

I'm not entirely certain it was NCAA division I, though.

Wherever he coached before, Graham's got a pretty damned impressive win record at Rice. (Stephenson owns WSU--he re-started the program from nothing.)

And yes, we beat AZ last night and I was there for the last four innings, parking in Siberia after my meeting and hoofing it the last half-mile or so. Woo hoo! WSU wins the regional AND we get the super-regional against UC-Irvine 'cause they beat up on Texas. I bought my session ticket online as soon as the box office "opened" this morning.
