Rice advances to Omaha (joining Georgia Tech, Clemson, Oregon State, Cal State Fullerton, and North Carolina. Georgia and South Carolina play a deciding game tonight, as do Miami and Mississippi).

Team USA didn't fare quite so well. Ah, well.

On a blog from the game:

Some in the media will attack the players, the coach, the selection, the tactics, but the truth is the U.S. just got thumped by one of the best teams in the world ...

Arena looked crushed in the postmatch conference. Said the right things. But one always senses that his hardest job has been convincing a highly confident team that they're not as good as they think they are, while also protecting them from situations that would expose their weaknesses. Now, for the first time, he might have some players who look at Nedved and Rosicky, who are great players, but not the greatest at this World Cup, and think, Oh no, maybe we aren't that good.

But they are that good. This is the strongest team by far the U.S. has ever sent to the World Cup. Now they just have to live up to their potential. This is heartbreaking stuff, though, World Cup Football.

I know. I'm English.

Lots of calls, IM, and so forth with my brother and a couple of other people. Given how spread out we are, information is flowing in the semi-chaotic fashion you might expect. But it still doesn't amount to much.

The police came by the house where dad was staying (helping a family friend who'd recently had a heart attack, which was a large part of the reason he'd returned from Europe) and took fingerprints today in hopes of matching them to the partial they already have. Maybe things will be definitive by tomorrow. Otherwise, things have slowed down, since we're probably not going to have the memorial service until July. We definitely won't have it the last weekend of this month, since that's my brother's birthday, and sooner probably just isn't practical, all things considered.

So, I guess I'm still going to see that Astros game come the 22nd. And a long-time friend get married the Saturday after that.

I honestly don't know if I'm going to Kansas City soon or not. I suppose it all depends if there's anything I need to be there for.
