That's a marvelous photo! What sort of bird?

It's a clark's nutcracker (which I've generally heard referred to as a clark's nuthatch -- which seems to be incorrect, since that's a whole different group of birds than the nutcrackers. I'll have to pay more attention when I go back up there and look at the signs, since I swear they say "nuthatch").

Anyway, it's different than the gray jay I use as my icon (one of these days, though, I'll get a good picture of a stellar's jay to use, since that's my favorite bird. Although I do have that plushie one, it's not the same).

At first glance, it looked like a Canadian Jay.

Yeah, the bird in my icon here is a Canada jay (although they're now called gray jays -- the Canada jay name is no longer an "official" name for them, although maybe still in common use in some places, like maybe Canada. :) I'd never heard of a Canada jay until today, and when I looked it up, found out they're actually the same bird as the gray jay).

The clark's nutcracker does look quite similar, but that's also the largest specimen I've seen, and the gray jays seem to get a bit bigger than that. Usually I've seen them smaller, and when I first saw one, I thought it was an immature gray jay or something (IOW, I had no idea what it actually was). The difference is much more obvious once you see still pictures of them, but I've never been anything but the most casual of birders, so I guess my mistake was understandable.

Awesome Clark's Nutcracker! That was one of the life birds David and I got out there together. (http://homepage.mac.com/deefairbanks/lifelist/lifelist-Pages/Image13.html) but your picture is way better!

Technically, that's not my picture.

This one, however, is:
